Experience of an International Exchange Graduate Student |
One summer internship was offered to an international exchange social work student from the African nation of Ghana, Mr. Stephen Kodwo. Mr. Kodwo holds a masters degree in Development Studies from the University of Ghana and was working on a second masters degree in Social Work from USC. His expertise is in the areas of community development programs for women and adolescent health. Mr. Kodwo’s experience at the Nurturing Center in the children’s and parents’ intervention programs “has been an important part of my training, especially regarding the work with children and parents. I have learned a great deal about the impact of child neglect and abuse.” Century Oak Resource Center conducts interviews for fall, spring, and summer internships for a limited number of placements. Oberlin College Student Reflects on Winter Internship at The Nurturing Center |
“This will be a life-changing experience, Alicia”, I was told upon hearing that I’d received an internship in South Carolina. While one month is a short period, I have seen and experienced a lot in the few weeks I have been a part of the Nurturing Center. My first few days left me overwhelmed but also excited to see how many aspects of a family could be addressed here. Through observing and being part of different programs here, I have learned about the many challenges abused and neglected children and their families face, in areas I was totally unaware of previously. By having such a comprehensive perspective of this Center, I was able to see how each program here is an essential part of the nurturing process. At the Nurturing Center, the collective hard work of each person combines to positively influence the lives of many. I have seen how small gestures can truly help an individual in a big way. Whether it is assisting with an important phone call or just listening to a parent’s concerns, these actions show how much we care about everyone who walks through the doors of the Nurturing Center. Although I have only been at the Center a little while, I have been made to feel like part of a wonderful community. Since my first day here, everyone here has been nothing but helpful and welcoming, and I have truly enjoyed being in such an important and challenging atmosphere. It indeed has been a life-changing experience for me. I will treasure the experience and knowledge I have gained as an intern here and know that I can apply them to my life and remaining studies at Oberlin. – Alicia Greene, Junior, Oberlin College |
