With the Nurturing Center's measurable successes in developing effective practices to treat child abuse and neglect, we feel a responsibility to share what we've learned with others beyond the Midlands. Our educational resource center, located at 1417 Pickens Street, opened to provide parents, educators, institutions of higher learning and other human service professionals with opportunities for training, information and support. Using the Nurturing Center as a lab site, the Century Oak Resource Center offers intensive undergraduate and graduate internships for social workers, psychologists, child and family specialists, and therapists. We serve as a site for medical residents in their behavioral medicine rotation and as a service learning site for education majors. For more information, please visit the internship section of our page. We have begun offering continuing education to professionals in other agencies who serve at risk families and young children, such as therapeutic child treatment centers and Parenting Partners. We have begun to conduct research at the Nurturing Center, study our findings in relationship to what others in the field are doing, and publish the results. Our plan also includes developing training and educational CD's; printed materials for parents; and information for child abuse and neglect treatment professionals.
The Nurturing Center has developed the Teen Parenting Program as a model for delivering services to teen parents and their children. Through Century Oak, we share information about curriculum and best practices so that this program can have positive impact for teen parents statewide and beyond.
